How To Be Safe On Social Media? : Precautions To Be Taken

Well, we all belong to the world where everyone is on social networking sites to stay in touch with their near and dear ones. Apart from it social media is also a global reform were people share photographs, experiences and personal contents.

As everything has pros and cons this also has a high degree of risk that includes cyber crime, Cyber-staking, bullying, online grooming and child abuse, phishing emails allegedly from social networking sites, etc.

Social Media : What To remember, What to follow?!

You can avoid these risks and enjoy using social networking sites by following a few wise guidelines that are mentioned below-

Use strong passwords

Creating a strong password will prevent hackers from gaining access to one’s account and using it to post spam or wicked attacks. When creating a password it is important to choose one that consists of no less than eight characters. The characters should consist of letters, numbers, and should be changed approximately every three months.

Read our guides on secure passwords practice to know more.

Keep your profile closed and allow only your friends to view your profile. Avoid sharing your personal social account to unknown person.

Do not say anything or publish pictures that might later cause you or someone else embarrassment.

Never post comments that are rude or may cause offence to either individuals or groups of society.

Be alert of what friends post about you, or reply to your posts, particularly about your personal details and activities.

Don’t post your holiday dates – or family photos while you are away – as social networking sites are a favorite research tool for the modern criminal.

Use the privacy features to restrict strangers’ access to your profile. Be secured about who you let join your network.

If you do get caught up in a cheat, make sure you remove any corresponding likes and app permissions from your account.

Ensure you have effective and updated antivirus software and firewall running before you go online.

Be Careful of Over-Friending

As a member of a social networking group, it can be exciting to gain new “friends” or followers. it is easy to find members with high numbers of friends, which can inspire a competitive streak in some. A high number of friends, however, it is not always positive. Some “friends” can be problematic by introducing spam into one’s timeline or some may even have criminal intentions.

Block unfriendly followers. Every social networking platform gives users a way to protect themselves from harassment or unwanted contact. When joining a social network one should disseminate them self with how to block another member. Once a person has been blocked, he or she will no longer have the ability to interact with the individual who has done the blocking.

Use Single On. Using a single sign-on for multiple platforms is one way that can reduce the possibility of getting your passwords into the hands of thieves and hackers. OpenID is the most common single sign-on to manage various accounts.

Always log off when you are done with the work.

Be the smart user of social media not just the user of social networking sites. Enjoy as well as stay safe and secure when you are online.
